A Calm, Sun‑Soaked Day at Cabbage Tree, Toko Mouth

Today felt like one of those rare, quietly perfect summer days — the kind I always hope for here at Cabbage Tree. I stepped outside early this morning and the air had that crisp, coastal coolness, the kind that wakes you up gently rather than biting at your skin. The sun was just lifting over Toko Mouth, laying a soft gold across the paddocks.

As the day settled in, the warmth built slowly. By afternoon it reached a comfortable 24°C, warm enough to feel summery but never suffocating. I noticed the humidity staying easy too — enough to remind me it’s midsummer, but not enough to make the air heavy.

What I loved most was the stillness. The cabbage trees hardly moved — just a slight flicker at the tips now and then. With no rain and barely a whisper of wind, the whole place felt calm, almost paused. It’s the sort of weather that makes you want to sit outside with a chilled drink and lose track of time.

The sun, though — that was something. It came through strong and clear, and when the UV hit 8, I could feel the familiar southern sting on my shoulders. I ended up retreating to a bit of shade for a while, grateful for it.

By late afternoon the light softened again, dressing everything in that warm, peachy glow that only Otago seems to manage so well. It was one of those days that reminded me why I love living here — the quiet beauty, the big skies, the easy pace of it all.
